Hiking in Northern Portugal - [Jason Barroso]
I will be visiting my families homeland in the region known as Tras os Montes, in Northeastern Portugal. I know it is a very isolated area and from what my parents tell me there is tons of hiking to be done there. I was hoping there was someone out there who had passed through the area and could give me some good tips regarding routes to take through the mountains, wildlife or any other helpful info.

We were there last fall. We did some EXCELLENT hiking from a home base room in Ponte da Barca. Unfortunately we got rained out and had to head south sooner than planned. We used a Sunshine Guide pretty exclusively, as there is very little written in English. Sunshine is based in England, so it can be hard to find in the US. Try www.adventuroustraveler.com. My geography on the area is a little rusty, you may be in an area further north-east? From looking at the map, I bet that area has some great hiking too. I envy you!
