Internet pages are merely files of text only: this text contains both the written contents of the page and the instructions to your browser on how to visualize it. You may see it by clicking on any point of this page with the right button of your mouse and choosing "HTML" (if you employ Explorer) or "View Source" (with Netscape).
Looking at the page that's been opened as we said above you'll see that it's made of text (the sentences that will be finally visualized) and by commands (called Tags): stripes contained between major and minor symbols. For instance:

<tag> text <tag> text <tag> text

So, if you are a little bit masochistic you may even wright an Internet page using Notepad....
If you don't want to learn tags you can employ some "generator programs": sort of programs which generate tags according to what you want to realise. In practice you only have to say: "I want this image in this point" and the program will do the rest.
Programs of this kind are generally supplied freeware together with Netscape and Windows 98 (Frontpage), finally also Office 97's Word somehow manages to do it.
Of course this kind of free programs aren't so great: if you want to pay for something better Dreamweaver by Macromedia for me is the very best (by their site it's possible to download the version Trial), and of course there may be others.

Final considerations

If your site is of about two or three pages the best thing is to employ programs you already have in your computer: Netscape o Frontpage (which are anyhow freeware and you may find at the newstand's or online), however it's better try to avoid Word.
But if you have in mind something wider it'd maybe worthy employing a better program and learning just a little HTML, to be able to correct something of the lot of rubbish that generators use to insert into the code :-)

All the software

To end with, the programs you will need for your site are the followings:

  • As above said, a program to write pages.

  • A program to elaborate pictures, wich may go from a rough one (you probably already have something of that sort on your computer) to a very refined and complex one (say as Photoshop) according to your needs.

  • You'll then need a program to upload your site (it's to say to position the pages you wrote on the server, via ftp). There are plenty of these ones (and many are absolutely freeware), my advice is to consult Tucows to the voice "ftp" and choose the one you prefer; we liked very much LeapFTP (shareware).
