SPAM, Flame and Troll, "dangers" of USENET

Two real nuisances for newsgroups are SPAM, merciless advertising (always off-topic) and the Flame, the fierce and endless quarrels that sometimes come off among newsgroups visitors. Both, SPAM and Flame, make life impossible in the groups, wasting preciouus space with absolutely uninteresting and off-topic messages. There is only one thing to do: never answer. Also if your intent is to stop them, the result would only be to waste more space. Moreover you'd often play the game of the "Trolls", malicious elfs amusing themselves by disturbing groups life.rn

So a very important precation is about preventing SPAM. Maybe you already received some SPAM among your e-mails, it's to say e-mail advertising. Probably somebody got you address somehow, and you are now included in some address list that's being sold to unscrupulous advertisers.
Collecting the addresses is ofte done by some "robots", it's to say programs that automatically make a selection among the header of the different newsgroups extracting the e-mail of the senders. This way they even get to know the area of interestr of the person whose e-mail they get, very useful!
One means to avoid this is not to put you correct e-mail in the configuration of you newsreader and to inform the reader in the text or in the signature of your post. If for instance your address is "pippo@provider.com", you may write in the configuration of your newsreader the address "pippo@pro.com" and then inform in the text that "vider" must be added to "pro". The main thing is to prevent the "robot" from getting your address automatically.

Signature:A signature is a short text file that you make your newsreader or e-mail program add. It often includes e-mail address, the web page and some synthetic info about you.
