Vagabondo's Den
Welcome to Vagabondo's Den,
This page is meant as a meeting place between you and us.
We want to make this site not just visited but also written by travellers for travellers. So, if you have any proposal don't hesitate to write to Den. We hope this will be a good opportunity for both you and us... see you in Vagabondo's Den!
- May 20th 2002
- The Vagabonds Finder is on line (section "People") This new section, after an idea of Matteo's, took more than three months work, that was chiefly done by poor Martino, who had to deal with the frightful PHP language (the true is he enjoyed it).
I think Vagabonds Finder will become one of the most important sections, as it makes visitors dialogue directly with each other to exchange info and experiences.
I hope that many will soon be the visitors that register (in fact it is the condition to have it working at the best).
- October 9th 2001
- New update to the Vagabondo's Links Library!
There you will find all new links added from May up to September.
Deeply updated pages about trains and plains.
- September 20th 2001
- What are we doing? Here it is:
- We are preparing the new Vagabondo's "Community":
IT WILL BE a section meant to let our visitors get directly in touch with one another, consenting to people sharing the same interests and way of life to meet.
IT WILL NOT BE one of these complicated and burdensome communities whose real final purpose is only to endow with some contents empty and tiresome portals.
- We eliminated the section about WEBRING: in our opinion this instrument lost great part of its meaning and so we felt it was useless to keep the section.
- We are now just completing the updating of the WEB section, wich will be on line at the end of september.
- We are preparing filters that will consen us to open again the service "add a URL" .
- August 23rd 2001
- We have been obliged to interrupt the possibility for our visitors to point out interesting new URLS: our sistem was spammed by two sites that flooded us with nearly 1200 signallings!
We are now preparing "filters" to avoid this and we intend to re-open the service and to update the section for the end of September.
- April 20th 2001
- Here is the new updating of Vagabondo'sLink library wit many new URLS, chiefly about Italy and Cuba.
Anoter important new thing is that we are now using ROAR!, Vagabondo's spider: it controls all the links that are already present, searching for the no more working ones before the updating of the library, so that we can correct or, in case, eliminate them. This time we eliminated 58 no more working links.
- March 21st 2001
- Together with Spring's arrival also the second issue of Fiamma's café came out.
It's full of suggestions for vagabonds and wanderers, images travelogues and even tales. Also many practical hints.

- December 11th
- At least the pages are available about Latin America in our WEB section. The work was long, as we went as far as selecting 150 useful sites for independent travellers, chosen among an ocean (without exaggerating) of advertising of hotels, villages, resorts, tour operator, etc.
We are still about visiting some more sites, and we'll probably add about twenty before Christmas!
- October 7th
- New updating of the section WEB, with more than 50 new sites!
Many new URL are pointed out to us every day and to select them is long. We include about 30% of them, the one we reject are usually advertisement of hotels or similar.
Moreover there are some really funny ones, see the following:
Description of the site: nternet Ukraine Nikolaev of news the newspaper the price the telephone the right the abstract the Nikolaev range a time-table(schedule) of trains advertising agency a history bank is photo the artists of acquaintance of aircash department internet Ukraine marriage jokes design for the information manufacturing painters a collection looking up (!!!??)
- To end with biking and trekking associations are often pointed out. I want to recall that we may review them only if in their site they provide useful information open to everybody, say itineraries and reports. We cannot include sites which merely describe the activities of the association, also if this is travel - related.
- September 27th
- The new section Fiamma's Café, already at its third issue in Italian, comes out now in its English version. Curiosities, hints and tips for wanderers about countries all over the world, written by travellers for travellers.
- September 15th
- We have completely renovated the section ROUTES!
Have a look and you'll find more advice, new directions and, we hope, all should be still easier to consult.
- July 25th
- New update to the Vagabondo's webrings section!
- June 14th
- We are completely renovating the "WEB" section of Vagabondo.
Take a look to the pages about European Countries (UK for instance) to understand how it's going to look like, but in July news will be greater:
- Pages will be still hand-made and we will still check personally every link submitted to us, but then links will be inserted automatically by ROAR!
- ROAR! Will also check periodically the consistency of each link, removing dead sites.
- We will save lot of time and be able to update the link-library more often.
- Many clickable maps will make easier to surf.
What's ROAR!?
ROAR! is a WML and SQL application created by Martino; "ROAR!" is the roar of Vagabondo bear.
- April 17th

Thomas wrote:
"A little icon (or even a boldfaced letter) indicating whether a tour is hiking, bicycling, city tours, water sports, car, or other categories might help skimming the page if people are planning a particular type of tour and would like to know who did the same."
Matteo answers:
I think it's a good idea. We'll try to manage it this autumn, when we update the Link library with a new Perl engine to generate (offline) our pages: this will save a lot of work and will consent to apply solutions like the one Thomas proposes.

- We also received a lot of links of other sites that could be interesting for Vagabondo. We will check all of them as soon as possible (and definitely before the end of the month).
- June 29th
- Opening of Vagabondo's English version!!! Ok, some translations are not that good and there are probably more than a few slips around; the important thing is that everything is comprehensible, we will check it all again soon...
