Every journey may offer a lot of possibilities.
However it happens that often one cannot seize them simply because one doesn't know at all about it. How many opportunities have you lost during your travels just because you wasn't aware of it?
Anyone who has ever tried to use the Internet to organize a journey has certainly had the experience of surfing for hours and hours in a sea of advertisements for hotels, restaurants, tour operators, travel agencies, etc. before finding a couple of interesting sites.
Yet the Internet may be an extraordinary instrument for travellers. Hundreds of persons share their experiences in "personal pages" others just waiting to meet other travellers and sharing knowledge and experiences, lots of newsgroups dedicated to travels.
Vagabondo is born with the idea of collecting together all these resources making them easily available, putting in touch persons from different cultures and realities that share the same passion for travelling: this is not the only purpose we aim at though.
We are convinced that tourism must enhance the local typical characteristics (being these cultural, historical or natural) against the "globalization" of tourist villages and big hotel chains, which look (and are) the same all around the world, and which tend to destroy the real local features and peculiarities.
Our Main Idea is, therefore, a net linking all the world together, but at the same time enhancing the infinite variety of places, nature and cultures.
The idea of creating this site came to Fiamma and Matteo, but Martino joined very soon, from the planning stage contributing with his ideas.
Now Matteo and Martino are concerned with all that is strictly related to the Internet, while Fiamma is looking after external relations.
All kinds of questions, suggestions or critiques are extremely welcomed by e-mail at us@vagabondo.net otheriwse just have a quick look at the mail form you can find inside Vagabondo's DEN.
I live in Rome, where I'm studying Architecture at the University.
Travelling, in any possible way, has always been for me a great passion, because I think that knowing new places and realities permits to open one's mind over the world: to "live" it, instead of simply sitting on it.
I like all those sports that are someway connected to exploration: from sailing to climbing to cycling. My favorite ones are definitely trekking and canyoning.
With this site I hope that people having my same interests will be able to find on the Internet what when I looked for it was not there: an effective instrument to get to know and exploit all the opportunities you can get from a travel.
The musicians I prefer are the R.E.M., the Jethro Tull and Alanis Morrisette.
For many years I have practised a very interesting profession. This, however, at present is becoming every day more heavy and less stimulating.
That's why I decided to dedicate more time to other things I have always liked: languages (I already know four quite well), and travelling, meant as knowledge of different places, art, culture and people.
I always thought that few delusions are stronger, after planning for long time a holiday, than that of finding ourselves in the wrong place and possibly with the wrong companions.
I hope that this site may help people that share my point of view to find right destinations and right travelmates.
I'm 26 years old and a philosophy student at Rome University. I decided to get involved in Vagabondo's project to put together my old passions for computers (do you remember Mr. Sinclair?) with my love for travelling. Though not so much in shape in the last years, what I've always loved best is "walking". Were it through Scottish Highlands or in some European city, I like the time and space of travelling to be decided by my steps (and by those of my travel mates).
In the picture you can see me trying to convince my friend and trekking mate Matteo (and sometime it's difficult!) that we got lost. Some say that experience is getting lost, in this case you have found expert guides. I hope that with our effort and the collaboration of many passionate travellers of any kind, this site can as the starting point to "get lost" in your travels.
Vagabondo is an Italian (Marsicano) Brown Bear, you can find him in the woods of the National Park of Abruzzo (150 Km. from Rome), but, as he is very shy, it is not so easy to meet.
He is different from his others European and American colleagues because of his smaller size, his nearly vegetarian diet and the passion for hiking: even during winter, in sunny days, he often breaks hibernation to take a walk on fresh snow.
No "cookies", nor ActiveX neither DHTML, no windows that open unexpectedly, no music: perhaps someone may find it dull, but we are betting all on contents (a good often rare on the Internet).
We tried to make using Vagabondo as easy and immediate as possible, also for beginners.
We also try to make our pages visible with as many browser as possible, to let anybody consulting us.
Finally, we think the most important thing is that the Internet make us able of keeping a direct contact between who makes the site and its visitors, and we want to make of this dialogue the strong point of Vagabondo.
We want to thank all the friends who help us to realize this site. Prticularly: Valeria and Paolo, Giovanni, Virginio and Luigi.
